Bethesda’s games traditionally thrive on PC and without sufficient modding, border on unplayable. Partly for that reason, Fallout 4 on consoles has had something of a rough ride.Frame-rate issues and Bethesda’s signature bugs notwithstanding, console peasants did manage to make their way through the game and have fun doing it. When it came to the Far Harbour DLC however, the peasants were stuck. This is a DLC that adds an entirely new playable area to the game and is as good as a new game in itself. The PCMasterRace, blessed with epically powerful PCs (relative to a console that is), breezed through the game and had a whale of a time. Bethesda’s QA department, which probably sticks to PCs anyway (good for them), let the DLC land on consoles, but didn’t notice that the game chugged along at a ridiculous 15fps (maybe they thought that was the norm on consoles). The peasants howled and after a time, Bethesda listened. They’re now working on a fix, but in the meantime, have come up with a solution that almost all console developers discover at some point or the other. They turned the graphics down.Bethesda suggests that console players delete the DLC from their consoles and download it again. The updated installer disables fog, or rather, turns it down quite a bit. The result is a game world with a minimum of fog and a minimum of atmosphere. The solution is reported to work, console gamers are getting 30fps and above, but the fog was central to the DLC’s storyline. It’s like shooting a movie about the Titanic and then cutting out all scenes with the ship due to budget constraints.Bethesda is still working on a permanent and more sensible fix to the problem. Hopefully, issues like this will force the peasants to finally join the PCMasterRace. What’s that? Sony and Microsoft are coming out with upgraded consoles? Damn you AMD, damn you.
