Audi's in-car entertainment system turns your car into a VR movie theatre: CES 2019

Audi has co-founded a start-up named 'holoride' to ensure quicker adoption of the new technology.

As cars become more autonomous, car manufacturers are trying to come up with innovative ways to keep passengers entertained while traveling. At CES, Audi showcased the inside of a sedan that was converted into a movie theatre.The company believes that this type of extreme vehicle entertainment, which Audi likes to call "Audi In-Car Entertainment," is the future of car design, especially since upcoming Audi models are predicted to be fully connected.[caption id="attachment_5858941" align="alignnone" width="1280"]Audi turns the car into a virtual reality experience platform at CES Audi turns the e-tron into a virtual reality experience platform at CES[/caption]For those still wondering, the car can basically be turned into a cinema when the vehicle is stationary; according to Audi, it's the "next-generation drive-in movie theatre."Audi recently announced that it was teaming up with Disney to create a new type of media and we finally know what that was all about. The company is demonstrating what is named "Marvel's Avengers: Rocket’s Rescue Run," an in-car VR experience for backseat passengers, brought alive by Disney Games and Interactive Experiences.[caption id="attachment_5858931" align="alignnone" width="1280"]Image: Audi Image: Audi[/caption]Wearing VR glasses, the passenger in an Audi e-tron is transported into a virtual depiction of outer space where the vehicle transforms into a spaceship manned by the Guardians of the Galaxy, as the passenger makes their way through an asteroid field together with that feisty little raccoon (Rocket) from the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.But in order to establish this new category of entertainment on the market quickly, Audi has co-founded a start-up named 'holoride'. holoride will use an open platform to allow carmakers and content developers to create and offer additional extended reality formats.CES 2019: To catch up with all the announcements from the world's largest consumer electronics show, head here.
