Apple seems to be gearing up for another leap in device innovation. A recently published patent suggests the tech giant might be planning to add multiple Action Buttons to future iterations of its iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

This feature, first introduced with the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max last year, and later extended across the iPhone 16 series, has gained traction for its customisability. Now, Apple appears to be thinking bigger, exploring ways to bring this functionality to a wider range of devices.

Multiple buttons, more possibilities

The patent hints at a significant evolution for Apple devices. Reports suggest that future iPhones may have volume rockers doubling as programmable buttons, complete with haptic feedback for a tactile experience.

This means users could potentially repurpose volume controls for specific tasks, adding versatility to everyday interactions. The patent also indicates that these configurable buttons might find their way to iPads, Macs, and other Apple gadgets, although their arrival on non-iPhone devices could take some time.

Apple’s bet on Action Buttons

The Action Button on the latest iPhones allows users to quickly access specific functions with a single press. It can be tailored to perform a variety of tasks, such as launching apps, recording voice memos, switching focus modes, or enabling accessibility features.

Essentially, it turns a simple button into a multi-functional tool, making Apple devices even more user-friendly.

Patents vs reality: What to expect

While patents often showcase exciting possibilities, they don’t always translate into immediate product changes. It’s unclear if Apple is merely protecting its ideas or actively working to expand the Action Button concept across its lineup. However, given the company’s trend of adding more controls — such as the recent Camera Control button — it wouldn’t be surprising if future iPhones sport multiple customisable buttons. Whether these features make it to iPads and Macs anytime soon, remains to be seen, but the potential for more intuitive device interaction has certainly sparked interest.

For now, fans of Apple’s innovative design philosophy can only speculate and look forward to what might be the next big thing in tech.
