For years, blood sugar tracking was largely the domain of people living with diabetes. Today, however, continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) have become one of the wellness world's most talked-about tools. Worn on the arm and connected to an app, these devices offer a real-time glimpse into how the body responds to food, exercise, sleep and stress.

Their growing popularity has been fuelled by a simple promise: helping people understand why they feel energised after some meals and sluggish after others. While experts are quick to point out that most healthy adults do not need a glucose monitor, many users say the devices reveal surprising patterns hidden within their daily routines.

One of the biggest revelations is that blood sugar isn't influenced solely by obvious treats like cakes, biscuits or sweets.

Foods often marketed as healthy can sometimes produce unexpected spikes. Fruit juice, for example, may seem like a wholesome breakfast choice, but removing the fibre from whole fruit allows sugars to be absorbed more quickly. Likewise, some oat-based drinks can trigger a faster glucose response than alternatives that contain more protein or fat.

The findings have prompted a rethink of what constitutes a "balanced" meal. Rather than focusing on individual ingredients, many nutrition experts advocate looking at the bigger picture. Pairing carbohydrates with protein, healthy fats and fibre can help slow digestion and create a steadier release of energy. Movement, in particular, stands out as a recurring theme. Many CGM users report seeing smaller glucose rises after meals when they take a short walk, run errands or simply stay active. The reason is relatively straightforward: working muscles use glucose for fuel, helping clear some of it from the bloodstream.

Even meal timing may play a role. Late-night dinners can sometimes lead to more erratic overnight readings, while eating at regular intervals throughout the day may support steadier patterns. Some people are also experimenting with meal order, starting with vegetables and protein before moving on to carbohydrates, an approach that early research suggests may help moderate post-meal glucose rises.

Yet for all the data these devices provide, experts caution against becoming overly fixated on every fluctuation. Blood sugar is designed to rise after eating, and a spike does not automatically mean a food is unhealthy. A bowl of fruit, a baked potato or a celebratory dessert can all trigger a response while still having a place in an overall balanced diet.

If continuous glucose monitors are teaching us anything, it is that health is rarely about a single food or nutrient. Instead, it is shaped by a constellation of habits: how we sleep, move, eat and manage stress. The technology may offer a useful window into those patterns, but the real takeaway is refreshingly low-tech. A balanced plate, regular movement, adequate sleep and a little less stress remain some of the most powerful tools for supporting long-term wellbeing.
