That tiny hole near your phone camera has a bigger role than you think
That small, easily missed pinhole beside your phone’s rear camera is not a design quirk. It is a dedicated microphone that helps your device isolate voices, reduce noise and improve video audio quality.

Most phone users have spotted it without ever wondering what it does: a small pinhole sitting just beside the rear camera lens, easy to mistake for a design flourish or a stray manufacturing mark. It is neither. That hole houses a microphone, and on modern smartphones, it does considerably more work than people assume.
Flagship phones typically carry three or four microphones, not one. There are usually two microphones near the speaker grille at the bottom, positioned close to where your mouth sits during calls, alongside one above the front camera and another at the rear, next to the lens. Each is placed for a specific job, and the rear one is no exception.
The positioning is deliberate. Because the rear microphone faces the same direction as the lens, it is well placed to record stereo sound during video and to pick up the main audio when filming with the back cameras, so voices and sounds ahead of the phone come through clearly. In other words, it is built to match what you are pointing at, not just what is happening around you.
Noise reduction is the bigger trick
Beyond capturing sound, this microphone plays a more technical role. It gives the phone a second audio feed, which software can use to separate a speaker's voice from background noise during calls and recordings.

Paired with existing noise suppression, this has narrowed the gap between phone audio and dedicated external microphones for casual video work.
What can go wrong
The catch is that this microphone is small and exposed, which makes it vulnerable to interference. Dust or debris lodged in or around any of the phone's microphone holes can degrade recording quality, and an ill-fitting case or screen protector without proper cutouts can muffle them entirely. If calls or videos sound suddenly worse, the fix is sometimes as simple as removing the case, checking the screen protector's alignment, and giving the housing a clean.
