Snow leopards, wolves and leopards coexist in Himalayas by hunting different prey, study finds
Research from Nepal's Lapchi Valley reveals how three apex predators share the same rugged landscape by reducing competition through distinct feeding habits.

Three of the Himalayas' most formidable predators are managing to coexist in the same high-altitude ecosystem by targeting different prey, according to a new study published in the journal PLOS One.
Researchers studying Nepal's remote Lapchi Valley found that snow leopards, Himalayan wolves and common leopards occupy overlapping territories and are active at similar times, yet avoid direct competition through differences in their diets. The findings offer fresh insights into how apex predators can share limited resources in one of the world's harshest environments.
The team, led by Narayan Prasad Koju of Pokhara University, analysed footage from 26 camera traps and conducted DNA testing on scat samples collected across the valley. Their results showed that all three predators were primarily nocturnal and used many of the same areas.
Snow leopards and Himalayan wolves were commonly detected between 3,500 and 4,500 metres above sea level, while leopards ranged from 2,200 to 4,200 metres, creating significant overlap among the species.
Different diets reduce competition
Despite sharing space, the predators were found to rely on different food sources. Snow leopards mainly preyed on wild ungulates such as blue sheep, which accounted for roughly half of their diet. Leopards depended more heavily on domestic animals, including sheep, horses and dogs. Himalayan wolves displayed the most varied diet, consuming blue sheep, musk deer, goats and yaks.
The researchers say the pattern supports the ecological theory of "niche partitioning", in which species reduce competition by specialising in different resources. By focusing on separate prey, the predators can coexist without frequent conflicts over food.

The study is particularly significant because Lapchi Valley now hosts all three large carnivores at the top of the food chain, creating a rare natural laboratory for understanding predator interactions in mountain ecosystems.
Beyond ecology, the findings carry implications for conservation and local communities. Predation on livestock remains a major source of conflict between people and carnivores across the Himalayas. The researchers suggest that protecting wild prey species such as blue sheep, musk deer and Himalayan serow could reduce pressure on domestic livestock.
They also recommend measures including predator-proof livestock enclosures and compensation schemes for herders. As predator populations recover in parts of the Himalayas, understanding how wildlife and people can coexist may become increasingly important for long-term conservation efforts.
