Indian Railways is preparing to enter a new chapter in clean transportation with the launch of the country's first indigenous hydrogen-powered train.

Described by officials as a "futuristic", "smoke-free" and "pollution-free" mode of transport, the hydrogen fuel cell train represents a significant milestone in India's push towards green mobility, sustainable transport and clean energy innovation.

Indian Railways has approved the introduction of a 10-coach hydrogen fuel cell train on the Jind-Sonipat section of Northern Railway in Haryana.

The project marks India's entry into a select group of countries experimenting with hydrogen-powered rail transport, including Germany, Japan, China and the United States.

According to the Ministry of Railways, the train is expected to begin operations on the Jind-Sonipat route and will use a 1,200-kilowatt hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system. The train has been cleared to operate at a maximum speed of 75 km/h.

The project is part of Indian Railways' broader efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and adopt cleaner technologies across the transport sector.

What makes a hydrogen train different?

Unlike conventional diesel trains, hydrogen-powered trains do not burn fuel to generate energy.

Instead, they use hydrogen fuel cells that combine hydrogen with oxygen from the air to produce electricity. This electricity powers the train's traction system, while the primary by-product of the process is water vapour.

The Ministry of Railways has described hydrogen fuel cell technology as a "clean alternative to conventional fossil fuel-based traction systems", noting that water vapour is the only direct emission generated during operation.

That is why hydrogen trains are often promoted as zero tailpipe emission trains and an important component of future sustainable transportation systems.

Why the Jind-Sonipat route was chosen

The Jind-Sonipat section in Haryana has been selected as the pilot corridor for the project. A dedicated hydrogen storage and refuelling facility has already been established at Jind to support operations.

Officials say the facility includes hydrogen compression systems, storage infrastructure and extensive safety mechanisms designed to ensure secure handling of hydrogen fuel.

The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) has also granted the required licences for hydrogen storage and dispensing at the site.

Safety is a major focus

Hydrogen may be a clean fuel, but it requires specialised infrastructure and stringent safety protocols.

To address these concerns, Indian Railways has equipped the project with hydrogen leak detectors, flame detectors, round-the-clock monitoring systems and regular inspection procedures.

Trained personnel will oversee critical operations, while technical staff will accompany the train during its initial phase of service.

The maintenance facilities and operational procedures have also been designed around strict safety standards.

The future of hydrogen in India's green initiatives
