Sabarmati jailbreak plot: Accused being questioned by cops

Ahmedabad: The city Crime Branch today started interrogation of the bomb blasts accused inside the Sabarmati Central Jail over their unsuccessful jail break bid, a senior police official said."The trial court has given us permission to interrogate the accused for the next 10 days starting today," Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) A K Sharma said."We have prepared a questionnaire, containing a set of questions to be asked to the accused," he said, adding that material was collected from the spot and plan of the tunnel, which was dug parallel to the drainage system, was also beingstudied.[caption id="attachment_623821" align="alignleft" width="380"] The Sabarmati Jail. Agencies.[/caption]"The soil sample is being collected to test its humidity, which will enable us to know the time of digging," Sharma added. A daring jailbreak planned by Ahmedabad serial blasts case undertrials at the Sabarmati Central Jail was thwarted by prison officials who found an 18-feet-long tunnel dug in thebarrack on Sunday, where some of them were lodged.As trial of the serial blasts case is being conducted inside Sabarmati Central Jail, the state government has invoked section 268 of the CrPC against all the accused in the case, restricting their movement, he said.According to sources, the tunnel was planned to be linked with an underground sewer line that passed beneath the main gate of the jail premises. Out of the 68 accused of the serial bomb blasts case, 14 were lodged in the barrack No. 4 called the 'Chhota Chakkar'.However, the remaining accused will also be interrogated, the official said. Police are also probing the role of jail staff which failed to detect the tunnel digging work which was going on for the last two months.PTI
