Norway row: Grandparents to continue agitation

New Delhi: While the Norway Child Welfare Services (CWS) has decided to give the custody of Avignan and Aishwarya to their uncle, Arunabhash Bhattacharya, the grandparents of the children will continue their sit- in protest in Delhi on Wednesday.Ajay Bhattacharya, paternal grandfather of the kids who have been living with a foster family in Norway, told Firstpost that he will call-off the agitation only when the government of India representative conveys this development to them.[caption id="attachment_228463" align="alignleft" width="380" caption="Ajay and Krishna Bhattacharya, paternal grandparents of children, are in New Delhi for a sit-in protest. But we have not heard anything from the government here,” said Ajay Bhattacharya, who is on a four days sit- in protest with his wife and the children’s maternal grand parents, outside Norwegian embassy in Delhi. Today was the second day of their protest.Bhattacharya added that if the same development (children’s uncle getting the custody) is conveyed to them by the government of India, they will end the agitation.In May last year, Norway CWS put the children of Anurup and Sagarika Bhattacharya with a foster family in Stavanger, Norway. The CWS was acting on a compliant filed by a staff of Avignan’s kindergarten which found his behaviour disturbing. After visiting the family for five months, the CWS representatives concluded that Sagarika was clinically depressed.The grounds for taking the children away are ‘gross negligence’, ‘incompetence.’Bhattachary’s lawyer has recommended Arunbhash, a dentist in West Bengal, eligible for taking care of the children. CWS has accepted this and the same will be proposed as a solution to Stavanger district court on 23 March.India has sent Madhusudhan Ganapathy as a special envoy to Norway to resolve the row.Earlier in the day, Bhattacharya told Firstpost that he was satisfied with the attempts being made by the government of India to reunite the children with their family.
