Mumbai acid attack victim's kidneys failing, say doctors

Days after her lungs collapsed, the Bandra acid attack victim's kidney functions are also deteriorating, making her condition critical, said Bombay Hospital doctors.Preeti Rathi recently underwent a surgery to close a hole in her windpipe, which helped improve her condition a little but her kidney functions have started to deteriorate, as per a Times of India report.Preeti's blood pressure and platelet count have gone down as well.[caption id="attachment_821037" align="alignleft" width="380"] Representational image. PTI[/caption]A resident of Delhi, Rathi got off the Bandra terminus on May 2 when a masked man threw acid on her. She sustained severe burns on her face, chest, arms and digestive tract."We conducted a surgery with the help of endoscope on Saturday, in which, we partially and temporarily closed the fistula (hole) in her windpipe with glue. We do not know how long this closing will last, but it had definitely brought about an improvement in her condition," Dr Ashok Gupta, consultant plastic surgeon with Bombay Hospital, was quoted as saying.Last week she also underwent jejunostomy, a procedure in which a hole is made in the small intestine to insert a tube through which feed is passed.Preeti has developed chemical pneumonia because of the acid entering her system.
