Militants target police party, injure two cops near Srinagar

Suspected Hizbul Mujahideen militants on Thursday attacked a police team during a procession in connection with Eid-e-Milad festival in Anantnag, about 50 kms from Srinagar, injuring an officer and a constable.

Srinagar: Suspected Hizbul Mujahideen militants on Thursday attacked a police team during a procession in connection with Eid-e-Milad festival in Anantnag, about 50 kms from Srinagar, injuring an officer and a constable. Reuters[/caption]The incident took place in Gooriwan where the police team was on routine law and order duty for the procession marking the birthday of Prophet Mohammad, police said.Sub Divisional Police Officer of Bijebehara Irshad Ahmad and a constable were injured in the firing, they said, adding both were shifted to a hospital in Srinagar.Later, a person introducing himself as spokesman for Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit called up media houses to claim responsibility for the attack on the police party.The caller, calling himself Burhanuddin, said the attack was carried out by the activists of the outfit and warned that such attacks will continue.
