India rolls out e-OCI card: Step-by-step guide to download your digital OCI card
India launches e-OCI card and FCRA 2.0 portal to digitize citizen services and streamline regulatory compliance.
India has announced the launch of the electronic Overseas Citizen of India (e-OCI) card for citizens living abroad, along with a revamped online portal to regulate foreign contributions. The two initiatives are aimed at simplifying compliance and improving public services.
Announcing the launch of the e-OCI card on X, the Bureau of Immigration wrote, "Great News for All OCI Cardholders! The e-OCI (Electronic OCI Card) has been officially launched!"
The post further read, "No more carrying your physical OCI booklet everywhere. You can now download your digital e-OCI Card on your mobile phone and present it at Immigration Check Posts and to airlines."
The initiatives were launched by Home Minister Amit Shah, who said that before 2014, the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) system was bogged down by paperwork, cumbersome procedures, and inadequate oversight.
More from IndiaAccording to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the FCRA 2.0 portal digitizes all major services under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, including registration, renewal, annual return filing, and other related processes.
Shah also unveiled the e-OCI card, saying it would benefit more than 50 lakh Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders by significantly reducing paperwork while eliminating the risk of losing or damaging physical documents. He added that the digital card would enable real-time verification and help speed up immigration clearance.
The MHA said the upgraded OCI platform allows applicants to complete the entire application process online, including filling out forms, uploading supporting documents, and downloading their approved e-OCI card.
Shah said the revamped system is designed to provide a seamless, fully digital experience for applicants while doing away with the need to carry physical documents.
He further announced that OCI cardholders aged 20 years or above will no longer need to obtain a new OCI booklet every time they receive a new passport. Instead, they will simply be required to update their passport details through the online portal.
How to download your e-OCI card
The Bureau of Immigration has shared a step-by-step guide on social media explaining how existing OCI cardholders can download their e-OCI card.
- Visit the OCI Services portal and log in using your existing User ID and password. New users must first register using the email address provided during their OCI application.
- After logging in, navigate to the e-OCI section on the dashboard.
- Your application details will appear on the screen. Click Generate e-OCI Card in the last column.
- Once the card is generated, download it to your device.
- Save the digital e-OCI card on your mobile phone. It can be presented to airlines and at Immigration Check Posts whenever required.
The Bureau of Immigration also clarified that all previously issued physical OCI cards will continue to remain valid.
