India is set to expand its global education footprint with the establishment of an international campus of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM Bangalore) in Indonesia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Tuesday during his visit to Jakarta.

The announcement was made during a joint press conference with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto after the two leaders held bilateral and delegation-level talks aimed at deepening cooperation across defence, trade, technology and education.

"We are going to establish a campus of India's prestigious management institute, IIM Bangalore, in Indonesia. This will greatly benefit the youth across the entire Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) region," Modi said.

Campus to come up in Singhasari SEZ

The new IIM Bangalore campus will be located in the Singhasari Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Malang, East Java. Singhasari is Indonesia's first special economic zone dedicated to the digital economy, technology and higher education, making it a key centre for innovation and talent development.

The announcement follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between IIM Bangalore and the Singhasari SEZ to establish the overseas campus.

Focus on management, AI and innovation

The campus is expected to offer programmes in management, digital business, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship and leadership development. It will also introduce MBA programmes designed for professionals from across Southeast Asia while promoting joint research and industry partnerships.

The initiative aligns with Indonesia's efforts to transform Singhasari into a regional hub for education, technology and innovation as part of its broader economic development strategy.

Strengthening India-Indonesia ties

The announcement comes as India and Indonesia continue to deepen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

During PM Modi's visit, the two countries signed a series of agreements covering defence, maritime security, healthcare, agriculture, telecommunications, research and critical minerals. Among the key outcomes were agreements related to the BrahMos missile system and defence cooperation.
