Delhi: Building collapses after explosion in Burari, rescue underway

A building collapsed in Delhi's Burari area on Tuesday.

The building collapsed after an explosion was reported in the areas at around 9:30 am, according to CNN-News 18.

Five fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The rescue was underway at the time of writing of the story.

“Delhi Fire Service received a call at 9:37 a.m. about a suspected blast and subsequent house collapse in Mukundpur. Five fire tenders were rushed to the spot, and emergency teams are assessing the situation. Further details are awaited," the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) said in a statement.

The authorities suspect that some people may be trapped under the debris. They have not yet commented on the cause of the explosion.

Visuals from the site have surfaced on social media. These visuals could not be independently verified.

This is at least the second such incident in Burari within a month. Last month, several shops in the neighbourhood's Daroga market caught fire on the intervening night of May 16 and May 17. At least 13 people were trapped in the fire, including 11 visually impaired students, who were rescued single-handedly by a policeman on night patrol duty in the area, officials told PTI.

The incident comes days after a five-storey building collapsed in the city's Saket area, killing six people and injuring at least 10.

In the incident, the upper floors of the building in Saket's Saidulajab locality caved in and fell upon the lower floors, causing massive slabs of concrete to land on nearly canteen, a popular spot among students of the locality’s coaching centres, according to The Times of India.
