Dehradun fake encounter: Court convicts 17 Uttarakhand cops

A CBI court in Delhi today convicted 17 out of 18 Uttarakhand Police personnel for allegedly killing a 22-year-old MBA student Ranbir Singh in 2009 during a fake encounter. The conviction has turned out to be the highest ever involving police personnel in a fake encounter case. AFP[/caption]The case was shifted to Delhi after the victim's father Ravindra Singh approached the Supreme Court requesting the same."Our stand has been vindicated by the trial court. The guilty police officers were booked for murder, kidnapping, criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence," CBI Director Ranjit Sinha told Times Now.According to a The Hindu report: Ranbir’s father had alleged that his son had gone to Dehradun in search of a job where he was arrested by the police on July 3, 2009 on pretext of being involved in some robbery. He had alleged that on the same day, 29 bullets were pumped into his body and the incident was passed off as an encounter.Eleven of the 18 convicted had surrendered on 5 June 2012.
