As India celebrates Republic Day, #RapePublicDay trends on Twitter in Pakistan

On a day when India celebrated its 66th Republic Day, with US President Barack Obama as the chief guest, Pakistan decided to bring up the issue of rising rape incidents in India and tweet using the hashtag #RapePublicDay. AP[/caption]However, it's one thing to protest against a social evil, and another to mock the entire nation. The tweets prove that most of them are doing the later.The tweets are rather ironic and ignorant given that rape is a huge social evil in Pakistan too.  According to a Pakistani report, a poll of 1,800 Pakistani men found that a third don’t think raping street kids is a crime – and they don’t even think it’s wrong too.Not just rape, the country also has a big moral policing problem."Every year close to 1,000 Pakistani girls are murdered by their own fathers, brothers or even mothers, for “moral indiscretions” ranging from going out on a date to dressing in western clothing to marrying the wrong man," notes the report.Why is it not raising the issue in its own country where  sexual violence against women continues unabated?Even though the hashtag was started to protest against rape, some took the Twitter war to talk about Kashmir:It also seems Pakistan is angry about the fact that Obama visited India.
