Another building collapses in Thane: 11 killed, six still feared trapped

Merely a week after a two-storey building collapsed in Thakurli in Thane district, another tenement collapsed in Thane city on Monday night. According to reports in the Hindustan Times and DNA, 11 persons have died in the incident.The 50-year-old three-storey-building, Krishna Nivas, collapsed in the early hours of Tuesday morning.  A security guard who worked in a neighbouring building was quoted as saying in the HT report that he heard a loud noise at about 2 am and then saw the structure crumble in a matter of about five seconds.[caption id="attachment_2377648" align="alignleft" width="380" class=" "] The building collapse in Thane district last week. Image courtesy- PTI[/caption]Fire Brigade officials said seven people were also injured when the building - Krishna Niwas - in D-Cabin area of Thane collapsed."We were all sleeping. Suddenly, the floors started moving and before we could run to safety, the building came crashing down with a loud sound," one of the survivors was reported to have told mediapersons.While five people have been rescued, six more are feared trapped under the debris. Efforts are underway to save them.Thane Municipal Corporation had issued notices to residents of the Krishna Niwas building as it was in a dilapidated condition, the officials said.While some families had evacuated the building a few others continued to stay there, they added.Fire Brigade and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel were engaged in the rescue operation.The Times of India report quoted a press officer with the Thane municipal corporation as saying that it was declared dangerous for occupancy, but residents continued to stay there.Last week, nine persons were killed when a building collapsed. Around 20 people were said to have been living in the building, which was about 35 years old.With inputs from IANS
