6.7 magnitude earthquake strikes off Nicobar Islands

No tsunami warning was issued after the earthquake hit.

A 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck off Nicobar Islands on Friday, the U.S. Geological Service reported.[caption id="attachment_1444757" align="alignleft" width="380"]Representational image. Reuters[/caption]The quake hit at a relatively shallow depth of 6.2 miles (10 km) about 68 miles (110 km) southeast of Mishap, Nicobar Islands, in the Indian Ocean, the agency said.The Indian Meteorological Department said that the earthquake had struck at 7:11 pm at a depth of 15 kilometres. The Indian agency pegged the intensity of the tremors at 6.3 on the Richter scale.There were no immediate reports of people being affected by the earthquake.with inputs from Reuters
