Autism research evolves: Early signs key as scientists explore possible brain links with Alzheimer’s
Autism and Alzheimer’s share brain wiring issues like faulty genes (SHANK3) and weak connections, raising later dementia risk. Experts stress spotting subtle signs before age 2 for life-changing interventions.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is increasingly being understood through a broader neurological lens, with emerging research pointing to possible links with other brain conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease. Experts, however, stress that early identification and intervention remain the most critical factors in improving outcomes for children.
“Early signs of autism often appear within the first two years of life,” said Dr. Supriya Malik, Developmental Psychologist and Head of Child Development Centre at Madhukar Rainbow Children’s Hospital. These may include limited eye contact, lack of response to one’s name, delayed speech, and reduced social engagement. Repetitive behaviours and sensory sensitivities are also commonly observed.
Dr. Malik emphasised that early recognition is not about labelling but enabling timely support. “When intervention begins early—ideally before the age of three—it can significantly improve language, behaviour, and independence,” she said, highlighting the role of speech therapy, occupational therapy, and behavioural interventions in shaping brain development.
Experts also caution against misinformation around autism risk factors. Concerns linking maternal infections to autism remain unproven. “There is no conclusive evidence establishing a direct causal link,” Dr. Malik noted, urging balanced, evidence-based communication to avoid unnecessary anxiety among expectant mothers.
At the same time, new research is expanding scientific understanding of autism. Dr. Avinash Kumar, Consultant Neurologist at Gleneagles Fortis Hospital, said studies have identified shared biological pathways between autism and Alzheimer’s, including disruptions in synaptic function and brain connectivity.
“This shifts the focus towards the health of neural networks rather than isolated disease markers,” he explained, adding that such findings could open new avenues for targeted therapies in the future. However, he stressed that the evidence remains preliminary and autism should not be viewed as a precursor to Alzheimer’s.
Experts underline that autism is a neurodevelopmental condition, not a disease to be cured. With timely support, inclusive care, and growing scientific insight, individuals on the spectrum can lead independent and fulfilling lives.
