Opposition-backed group enforces transport strike in Kathmandu

Kathmandu: An opposition-backed youth organisation enforced a transport strike here today, demanding Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai's resignation to pave the way for the formation of a national consensus government.Vehicular movement was halted in Kathmandu valley for four hours today as Youth Association Nepal (YAN), a sisterm organisation of CPN-UML, enforced the transport strike.At least three vehicles were vandalised by the cadres belonging to the YAN in Kathmandu for defying their strike, according to the police.[caption id="attachment_405722" align="alignleft" width="380"] Reuters[/caption]Most of the schools and colleges were shut down due to the transport strike that started from early morning. They vandalised a taxi in Kalimati, another taxi in Gangabu and a microbus in Baneshwor area in the outskirt of Kathmandu, the police informed .Chairman of YAN, Mahesh Basnet has said that they would continue with the ongoing protest programmes unless Prime Minister Bhattarai steps down.The YAN cadres had also taken out a torch rally against the government in Kathmandu yesterday evening. Ten people including YAN Secretary Niraj Acharya were injured when police tried to intervene in the rally near Tri Chandra Campus in Kathmandu.The protest programme was part of the agitation being launched by main opposition Nepali Congress and CPN-UML to dislodge Prime Minister Bhattarai to pave way for formation of a national consensus government.PTI
