Dense fog affects Delhi flight operations

New Delhi: Flight operations were partially affected in New Delhi today after dense fog enveloped the IGI airport. About 90 flights were affected due to bad weather in Delhi and neighbouring areas, airport officials said. Three flights, including an international one, were diverted to Jaipur after the visibility dipped here, he said.[caption id="attachment_185710" align="alignleft" width="380" caption="Not easy to fly. Reuters"][/caption]Dense fog descended in patches at the new as well as the main runways of the airport between 3am and 7.30am due to which the runway visual range hovered around 75-200 metres on the new runway and 100-200 metres on the main runway. A total of 88 flights were delayed due to bad weather and operational reasons here while six were cancelled owing to poor weather conditions at the destination. Airport Met department forecast said dense fog is likely to descend at the airport from 1.00am reducing the general visibility to less than 200 metres on the new runway while the visibility would start to deteriorate from 5.30am at the main runway.Poor visibility forced the airport authorities to implement low visibility procedures on new runway from 2.15am and on main runway from 3.08am, and was terminated at 12.30pm on both the runways.A total of 280 flights operated using various categories of Instrument Landing System.
