Over 140 appeals filed against Competition Commission orders in 2012-13

This is substantially more than 36 appeals filed during the year 2011-12. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has the mandate to keep a check on unfair trade practices at the market place.

New Delhi: More than 140 appeals challenging the rulings of fair trade regulator Competition Commission were filed during 2012-13 fiscal.

The appeals were filed with the Competition Appellate Tribunal (Compat), according to the Commission's annual report for 2012-13 period.

This is substantially more than 36 appeals filed during the year 2011-12.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has the mandate to keep a check on unfair trade practices at the market place.

Taking together the number of appeals (34) pending before Compat at the beginning of 2012-13 and those filed during the last fiscal, the total number of such appeals against the CCI touched 176.

Compat is a statutory organisation established under the Competition Act to hear and dispose of appeals against any direction issued or order passed by the fair trade regulator.

As per the report, Compat had set aside the rulings of the fair trade regulator in 5 cases in the last fiscal year.

The cases wherein the Compat had allowed the appeals were that of -- Kingfisher Airlines, Eastern India Motion Picture Association, Medical Product Service, Pes Installation and MDD Medical System India.

Besides, Compat had upheld the Commission's orders in 35 cases involving Film Distributors Association of Kerala, Telewings Communications and Travel Agents Association of India.

Compat is headquartered at New Delhi and V S Sirpurkar, a former Supreme Court judge, is its Chairman.
