Wiring problem: Maruti recalls 69,555 units of old Dzire, Swift, Ritz models

India's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki today announced that it would recall 69,555 diesel cars to inspect and, if needed, repair wiring harnesses in the vehicles that it had manufactured over three years.

The company is recalling 55,938 units of the old version of its mid-sized Dzire, 12,486 units of the old model of the hatchback Swift and 1,131 units of its small car Ritz that were manufactured between 8 March 2010 and 11 August 2013. Only the diesel variants of these cars have been affected.

In an official release, the company announced that it was proactively undertaking the repair and it was being done after the problem in the vehicles was noticed following feedback and internal checks.

"This exercise is limited to vehicles within the above specified range and does not pertain to any other vehicle of the company or its exports," the company said in its statement.

The company said that its dealers would contact the owners of the affected vehicles and the technicians would inspect the condition of the wiring harness of the car and carry out repairs, if needed, free of cost.

The wiring harness refers to a system of insulated conducting wires bound together with insulating materials, used in the electrical system of a car. It wasn't immediately clear how the wiring harness in these vehicles was affecting the performance of the vehicles.

"Users of Maruti Suzuki diesel cars (Old Dzire, Old Swift and Ritz) can check the Company's website www.marutisuzuki.com to ascertain if their vehicle is among the above mentioned vehicles. This information will be available immediately on the website," the company said.

The company also said that customers just needed to input their chassis number to know whether the vehicle was eligible for the recall or even contact the nearest Maruti Suzuki dealer workshop to know the status of their cars.
