Policy Aims To Increase IT, ITeS Revenue To $300 Bn By 2020

The union cabinet might take a call on the proposed IT and electronics manufacturing policy next week, Communications Minister Kapil Sibal said.

"Cluster policy was recently approved. IT policy will probably come to Cabinet in the next meeting hopefully as well as the electronic manufacturing policy...next week we will have both policies in Cabinet," Sibal told reporters on the sidelines of 2012 Cloud Summit organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

The draft national policy on electronics targets a turnover of about $400 billion by 2020, including employment for about 28 million people.

The draft national policy on IT aims to increase revenue of IT and IT-enabled services from the current $88 billion to $300 billion by 2020.

Sibal said the government is evolving a policy framework for cloud computing to address concerns as well as drive the cloud revolution.

The minister described cloud computing as "a fine economic solution in a complex knowledge economy" and suggested that the focus could be on small and medium enterprises and the starting point could be clusters, which have common purpose and vision.
