Intel has been working on developing solutions for self-driving cars for a few years now and in fact, they already have a platform in place to enable that. Recently, Intel announced that it was acquiring Itseez, a company specializing in computer vision and image recognition.TechCrunch reports that Itseez’ portfolio includes algorithms called “advanced driver assistance systems,” which will help identify pedestrians, other vehicles, traffic lights, and more on the road. Intel also acquired Yogitech in April, a company offering products that verify the integrity of semiconductor circuits. The system will be crucial for the IoT platform.Doug Davis, Senior VP and general manager of IoT Group, Intel, says, “Itseez will become a key ingredient for Intel’s Internet of Things Group (IOTG) roadmap, and will help Intel’s customers create innovative deep-learning-based CV (Computer Vision) applications like autonomous driving, digital security and surveillance, and industrial inspection.”As Intel mentioned earlier, they’re focus with IoT is to provide end-to-end solutions rather than just platforms. The acquisition of Itseez will help Intel do just that.Intel’s existing solution for self-driving cars is called Intel In-Vehicle solutions. It’s powered by Intel’s Atom architecture, the E3800 series to be precise, and is said to be a “fan-less, automotive-grade platform.” The entire system runs on Linux and supports a range of services including connectivity and multimedia/entertainment options.
